Day 14: Rottnest Island
Today we had an early start to catch the ferry to Rottnest Island. This was quite a challenge for Andy & I as we literally haven't unpacked anything from when we stuck everything into packing cubes in the van. But we made it to the terminal on time!
We did have a small hiccup as we got to the front of the queue to find the tickets I'd booked on my phone had to be exchanged for paper tickets so Andy and I raced over to the ticket office to sort it out leaving Bec & Ol place holding in the queue
We made it onto the ferry and as you can see the sun was crazily bright so the ferry pics weren't great
The first thing we saw when we got off the boat was this pelican - seconds after this photo was taken it dropped a very liquid poo which narrowly missed a couple of people below
Ol had arranged bike hire on the island so we needed to pick those up. Andy & I also bought some new swim stuff (like I need any more right??)
we started off doing a bit of exploring on the bikes. It took a while to get our bearings
We then stopped for a while at Pinky Beach. This was a gorgeous little cove with flat rock allowing paddling and then a sharp drop into the water for swimming. The water was beautiful and very refreshing
We found a place to have lunch where we met some of the famous Rottnest Quokkas
Then Ol and Bec decided they wanted to cycle the perimeter of the island (insane!!) which was apparently very hilly but they did get some adorable quokka selfies
Andy & I probably cycled about another 300 yards, took a couple of pics then found another nice beach to relax on called Geordies Beach
We had to get our bikes back & head back to the ferry for 2.30
Here's my really bad attempt at filming Andy riding his bike while also trying to steer my own!
I should have mentioned that it was Ol's birthday. So we'd arranged a family video call which we set up at the rooftop bar in the hotel
It was great to chat to Ava, Maddy, Nick & Ellie and after the call ended Maddy sent us an audio of Ava saying happy birthday to Ol!
We then went to a great restaurant called Vin Populi that Bec had tracked down via recommendations. It was so good that Andy and I are going again the night before we fly. An added bonus was that our waitress was a lovely lady called Zoe from Somerset!
Andy and I have just been crying laughing at this video - I can't believe we were so out of tune singing happy birthday!!
Then back to the balcony for more wine and more chat before an early ish night as Ol and Bec have an 8am flight. They were planning to stay another night but then all this Iran stuff happened and they, like us, had to change flights
Its been fab having them here x
