Day 5: Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse

Last night while we were in bed it rained like crazy. You know what rain is like in a caravan - so loud! But today it's a beautiful day again so maybe it was needed to clear the air.
I think I said yesterday that where we are in Augusta is quite off the beaten track - I was surprised at how quiet the town is. I'd say each of the sites we've stayed at has had upsides and downsides. The downside of this one is that that the WiFi isn't great, but the upside is that it's really peaceful

I've been waking up earlier than Andy so I sometimes go and sit upfront in the cab and update the blog (as Beth and Jamie are aware, as I've had early morning here WhatsApp chats with both of you!)

So I took this pic from the passenger seat at 5.45 this morning as it was so peaceful

The other nice thing here is that we are close to the laundry. So this morning was washing day!

Warning - this video is quite dull!

Andy walked into town with a shopping list of cleaning products, bread etc - here's his morning:

After we'd finished our thrilling morning washing, cleaning and shopping we moved on to the main event of the day.
Going up to Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse was on our list of stuff we wanted to do out here. It's the southwesternmost point in Australia and where the Indian Ocean meets the Southern, or Antarctic Ocean.

We drove down to the Harbour and left the camper there to pick up the trail. We could have driven all the way up to the lighthouse but what would have been the point? We wanted a walk along the coast and it didn't disappoint.

These are just a few from the walk up

And these are from when the lighthouse came into view.

We went up to the top of the lighthouse. I tried to get a bit of footage of the workings:

And we went out on top of the lighthouse

And took lots of pics of this stunning point where 2 oceans meet

And look where the metal bits of the lighthouse were made!

Then we came down the lighthouse and walked down to the actual south west tip of Australia

Finally we did the 4.5K walk back to Augusta, stopping off at one of the many tiny little pristine deserted beaches on the way

On the trail back was a section we christened "Snake Alley" as it had signs saying "beware of snakes"

I was not happy with Snake Alley!

Andy was not helping!

And strangely seconds after this video was taken I almost stepped on a snake, although it was a pretty harmless grass snake, and when I screamed it disappeared into the bush

We were pretty shattered after our walk and as we hadn't needed our packed lunches (there was a cafe at the lighthouse) we ate those and drank wine in the camper & went to sleep around 8pm!
